Smart Traffic Lights Make Travel Smoother in Huainan

Recently, Huainan City has equipped with a set of smart traffic lights system to optimize traffic based on the traffic information collected in real time, according to the report by cctv.com.

The smart traffic lights can automatically adjust traffic lights order to improve the efficiency of traffic, transforming from “vehicles waiting for green lights” to “traffic lights turning green for vehicles”.

During the morning rush hour, the reporter saw at the intersection of Minhui Street and Huaihe Avenue in Huainan City that the newly installed smart traffic lights system extended the green light from 49 seconds to 60 seconds in the north-south direction and correspondingly shortened time in the east-west direction after monitoring and calculating the flow in four directions.

“Previously, people had to wait for a long time at this intersection, but now we can clearly feel that the green light is on for traffic, which is much smoother than before.” said Hao Xiangxiang, a resident in Huainan.

The system was joint developed by local traffic police, high-tech enterprises, and universities. It uses intelligent cameras and algorithm terminals to sense the traffic information of motor vehicles, non-motor vehicles, and pedestrians, and then automatically adjust traffic lights based on traffic flow, avoiding phenomenon such as “green lights for no vehicle” or “traffic lights turning red at a wrong time”.

At present, Huainan has installed the system at 8 intersections. The phenomenon of green lights for no vehicles has been resolved, reducing the average waiting time during morning and evening rush hours by 22 seconds and increasing traffic efficiency by 15.7 percent.
